我的創作以女性的感受為主軸,又以追求“美”的過程和感知居多。作品中討論了許多現代女性主義所產生的社會現象。包括女性體毛、整形文化、身材等等議題。在“As a Female 身為。女人” 的系列作品中,我試圖傳達身為女性的不同觀點並且揭露許多社會上對於女性的不公平對待,同時也提醒觀者這些規範還依然存在現今社會當中。
創作的靈感來源來自於我自身的經歷和社會上的性別刻板印象。為了表現女性的強韌特性,我以金屬作為創作的主要材質。大部分的作品運用了蝕刻技法刻花來影射傳統的女性印象。此外,我擅長觀察每種材質的特性並應用在作品裡去強化所傳達的理念。“Like My Hair就像我頭髮”系列作品中,運用了真髮去凸顯作品和我自身的關係,更打破了傳統首飾的材質單一性。再者,“塑膠手術”系列作品運用3D列印技術輸出成整形假體並結合金屬構成,表現出現代科技的制式化和非自然性。為了表現出女性為了忍受社會上被壓抑的規範的情緒,在造型上,我參考了許多中古世紀的刑具做為發想,並應用許多工業車床或銑床的加工技巧去表現機械化的元素,期待觀者能從中感受到作品裏散發的痛苦情緒。
自古以來,女性就花費相當的心力去滿足社會上的期待。儘管時代的進步,女性依舊在追求社會上和男性所創造狹隘的“美”。沒有人甚至女人自身能夠理解這些所謂身為女性的不合理的犧牲。我們被動地去接受這些規範,然而,什麼是“美”?“美”又是誰定義?為什麼我們要去遵守這些教條?我想要利用我的創作,去揭露這些總是遭受層層規範所掩蓋的“美”,更去探索“美”的真實樣貌。
My work focuses on the feelings of women when they attempt to pursue beauty in order to satisfy the norms of society. I discuss the social phenomenon of modern feminism, such as body hair issues, plastic surgery or body shaming. Today, the normative standard of beauty ideals for women requires a virtually hairless body and a thinner figure. In my work I try to celebrate being a female and the many different aspects of femininity. Specifically, in the body of work “As a Female”, I hope to reveal some of the unreasonable sacrifices of women and remind people that these norms still exist in modern society.
I was inspired by my own experiences and the gender-stereotyping phenomenon of our society. I used a variety of materials to strengthen my perspective. For example, in the series work, “Like My Hair,” I combined personal objects to emphasize the relationship of the work with myself, such as human hair. Also, I used 3D printing to print a chin and nose implant to represent the repeatability and unnaturalness of plastic surgery. In order to express the strength of women, I used brass to symbolize stereotype of woman by etching a floral pattern on it. To represent the agony that women endure when they subject themselves to society's oppressive idea of beauty, I utilized lathes and industrial elements to invoke the mechanical feeling much like a medieval torture device. I try to evoke an interactive relationship between viewer, wearer and the work itself. I expect the viewer can experience the very real pain of wearing the device, and the audience can feel the actual discomfort.
Despite centuries of supposed progress, much like in ancient times women's daily lives are still spent in futile attempts to fulfill and pursue both an ambiguous and narrow idea of beauty in a society created by and for men. However, no one, including women themselves, can understand the unreasonable sacrifices and pains of being a woman. We are forced to follow these norms. But what is beauty about? Who defines it? Why do we have to obey the rules? I want to use my work, a series of wearable jewelry, to reveal the suffering that is always been behind our standards of beauty.
